About this race
Why spend the night dancing when you can spend it cycling!
As one of South Africa’s top mountain biking events, this marathon offers a thrilling mix of demanding cycling and breathtaking views through stunning mountain ranges, leading into the heart of the beautiful Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. It is a team event that has been growing in popularity since its inception in 2004, earning a spot on many mountain bikers’ bucket lists.
The idea for this event was born during a family holiday in the Baviaanskloof. Being avid mountain bikers, the family wanted to share the Baviaanskloof experience and decided that a mountain bike race would be the perfect way to do so. It took them seven years to develop a concept that would not only capture the essence of the Baviaanskloof but also present a true test of endurance and a unique challenge.
For six years, this event held the title of the ‘longest single stage team MTB event’ globally, focusing on whether the route is rideable, unique, enjoyable, and most importantly, achievable. Unlike a typical MTB race, this team event consists of 2, 3, or 4 cyclists per team, offering a distinct experience.
The event stands out because the entire route is unmarked, challenging each rider's navigation skills. This fosters teamwork and camaraderie, making it an unforgettable adventure. Teams must check in and out at strategically placed checkpoints along the route, allowing their progress to be tracked. The late start time of 10:00 ensures that all riders, including the leaders, will need lights for night riding, making it a true test of character and endurance.
Great races come with great rewards! Due to the night-time finish, the first 10 teams to complete the race are celebrated with a rocket launch. Every finishing team receives a commemorative medal, which forms part of a puzzle that fits into a shield after completing five events, encouraging riders to participate in the Trans Baviaans at least five times. The 230 km journey from Willowmore to Jeffrey’s Bay must be completed within 24 hours to earn a medal.
Do you have what it takes to conquer the Trans Baviaans? This is not an event to be underestimated. However, with careful planning, a fully charged night-light, strong navigation skills, and plenty of energy, it’s a very achievable challenge that will undoubtedly elevate you to the status of an ultimate mountain biker!
